Film zainspirowany prawdziwymi wydarzeniami. Jest koniec lat 90. Działacz ruchu LGBT, redaktor gejowskiego magazynu, Michael Glatze, zagrany brawurowo przez Jamesa Franco, z dnia na dzień doznaje osobliwego olśnienia, zakłada własny kościół i zostaje chrześcijańskim pastorem z troskliwą i wyrozumiałą dziewczyną u boku. Jego były chłopak nie może poradzić sobie z nową sytuacją i choć angażuje się w związek z innym mężczyzną, ciągle myśli o wspólnej przeszłości. Debiutant Justin Kelly ostrożnie, choć nie stroniąc od kontrowersji, próbuje szukać źródeł i opisać efekty nagłej przemiany znanego aktywisty. Nie ocenia, nie szufladkuje, zachowując relatywny obiektywizm, stawia pytania o tożsamość i podstawy związków. Scenariusz filmu powstał na podstawie artykułu opublikowanego przez nowojorskiego „Timesa” pod tytułem My Ex-Gay Friend. Pokazany m.in. na festiwalu Sundance i MFF w Berlinie, przez krytyków IndieWire film Kelly’ego został nazwany prowokującym i fascynującym.
